The Process

After designing and cutting, the piece is placed on top of a layer of clear glass and then powdered glass (frit) and tiny glass pieces (also called frit)
are sprinkled to give it the effect and strength.

If you look closely you might be able to see the bubbles caused by the tiny frit  between the triangle pieces. The powdered frit  on top pieces  comes out smooth with very few bubbles.

After some finish work the piece is placed on a special mold and returned to the kiln to "slump" into a slight bowl shape.

This is called a pot melt. Although it looks like a random pile of glass, the colors and placement matter!

Each trip through the kiln requires 6-12 hours and this piece was fired 5 or 6 times

I started with a mix of leftover pieces

Fired the kiln to make the glass molten

The result, was sanded and refired

Powdered glass and a sheet of glass on top

After another firing it is food safe

Back in the kiln to "slump" into a mold

The same process with different colors and an amazing result.
